Thought, carried far.
Geese cross great distances in formation. Ganshisha is a small press devoted to modern Japanese thought, French social thought and literature, and the religious and local histories of central Japan — giving durable book form to ideas that fell outside the mainstream.

What we publish
Our subjects have always sat at the edge of the mainstream. We follow people and questions that the standard histories left out, and we take our time doing it.
-
Modern Japanese thought
The intellectual history of Japan since the Meiji era — the people and questions the standard accounts left out.
-
French thought and literature
Translations and studies around French social thought and literature — Blanqui, Camus and others.
-
Social thought
The history of social thought, Marxism and agrarianism — how ideas and societies shape each other.
-
Religion and local history
The religious and local history of central Japan: temple records, songs and documents.
-
Biography, diaries, records
Lives and diaries — reading an era again through one person’s record of it.
Thought, carried far.

About Ganshisha
Geese are birds of passage. They cross great distances in formation, and when the season turns they come back. The ideas we have published travel in much the same way — carried across generations, and sometimes left behind.

We are open to publishing proposals
If there is a subject you want to take on, a person you want to write about, or material you have gathered, we would like to hear about it. A formal proposal is not necessary.
